General Update

Tuesday, March 31st, 2009

As you may have read on Jen’s blog, we both have just started the 100 Pushups routine. We just finished day 2. I was still pretty sore from day 1, but after the initial set they all went pretty quickly.

I also added a new page, just ’cause I can, and I think that if more people knew what kind of high-quality software was available for free, they would use it more.

Netflix Blu-ray Prices Going Up

Monday, March 30th, 2009

With our current plan, we’re going to have to start paying $4/month for Blu-ray access instead of $1.

It’s still well worth it, IMO.

Well. That settles that.

I just logged into my Yahoo account to see what options I had as far as exporting my address book.

Turns out I don’t have any options because THEY’RE ALL GONE. Every contact I’ve had. Don’t know where they are.

I noticed a while ago that the autocomplete on my To field wasn’t happening anymore, but I didn’t really think anything of it. (Most of my communications are in the form of replies anywho.) Guess it was because they decided to blow away all of my contacts.

Toodles, Yahoo. I’ll be sending out an information email to most of you reading this with my new email address in the near future.

We Rock FM 102.1

Sunday, March 22nd, 2009

For the third (fourth?) week in a row, “Fight” was played on FM 102.1′s local show.  Not only did we get our song played, but we got a shoutout from Kenny and Mike from Something To Do about our upcoming show with them and The Invaders.  Suzanne (the DJ) has said nice things about us a few times, which means all of that bribe money is finally paying off.

Which brings me to my next point: We’re playing Ska Fest this Saturday at The Modjeska.  We have an early slot, so plan on us hitting the stage near 5:00.  If I find out for sure I will update this post.  The Modjeska is at 1128 Historic W. Mitchell St. in Milwaukee.

Email Schmemail

Sunday, March 22nd, 2009

For more than ten years I’ve been using the same email address at Yahoo. It’s been my go-to point of contact. Like a crusty old married couple that fights all the time, however, I think I only stick with it as a matter of convenience. Yahoo doesn’t do anything to particularly impress me, but it’s always been there for me. (I always seemed to have less problems than the folks I know that use Hotmail.)

I’ve also had a Gmail account since 2004. I actually forgot that I had it for a few years. That was back in the day when it was still in beta and one needed an invite to participate. I remember that I wasn’t really impressed with it at the time, and as such did not stick with it, going back to trusty old Yahoo.

Fast forward to today and Gmail is the new rock ‘n roll and all the kids are doing it. There are two things I like about Gmail, which might push me towards using it more. 1) There are a ton of Firefox addons that tweak the Gmail experience, and I love to be able to dink around with things. 2) POP and IMAP forwarding. I like using Thunderbird for email, and forwarding with Yahoo is only available with their premium service. ($20 a year? More?)

I also have yet ANOTHER email account which is associated with the domain michaelhermes.com. (xxxx@michaelhermes.com) Since I have my own email server through there, I can use Thunderbird to my heart’s content. Good times. I like owning my emails instead of trusting all of my communication to webmail. (I am leery of the onset of cloud computing.)

At the end of the day I think it might be time to move away from Yahoo. The transition period won’t be too bad, as I will still have my Yahoo account and check it from time to time. I just have to figure out where exactly I’m going to…
